Severe criticism of the Prison and Probation Service, Sörbyn Prison, for having induced an inmate to use a catheter for a urine test

A prison induced an inmate to use a catheter for a urine test without either him or others who were present having sufficient knowledge to do so. At the time the sample was due to be taken, the inmate was informed that this was the only remaining way to provide a urine sample and that a refusal could lead to transfer to another prison.

According to the Parliamentary Ombudsman, under these circumstances, the free will of the inmate must be considered to have been illusory. She finds it particularly remarkable that even after it was clear that a nurse did not intend to take part, staff at the Prison and Probation Service went ahead and took the urine sample using the catheter. The prison is severely criticised.
