International cooperation
Sweden was the first country in the world to introduce a Parliamentary Ombudsman. This was more than 200 years ago. The international interest in the Swedish Institution has been, and still is, great. Today there are similar institutions in 140 countries, on all continents.
Since the 1970s, JO has been engaged in international cooperation and participates in various networks of ombudsmen, such as the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), which is a global organisation of ombudsmen. Currently, JO prioritizes cooperation in the geographical vicinity and takes active part in the Nordic and Baltic-Nordic Ombudsman networks. Through such exchange of experiences, JO can both get inspiration on how to further develop our own working methods, and contribute to other countries’ development in various respects.
